The Sinai is a great rock-climbing destination, offering everything from beginner-friendly routes to truly world-class rock faces for experienced climbers. Around St Catherine in particular, you can find some of the finest climbing in the region in a spectacular mountain setting. While we are not rock climbers ourselves, we have worked with professional climbers and understand their logistical needs. You should know your own ability level and have your equipment, insurance, and paperwork in order, and we can take care of the local arrangements.

Below are some of the most popular climbing areas and rock faces in the Sinai High Mountain Region. Access, approach times, and logistical requirements vary considerably, from cliffs that can be reached directly from the town of St Catherine to remote walls requiring long walks and an overnight camp.
Ras Safsafa

Ras Safsafa is one of the most impressive mountains in the St Catherine area and dominates the skyline above the town. It is a demanding climb, but the effort is rewarded with spectacular views over St Catherine, the surrounding valleys, and the highest peaks of Sinai. It is very easy to access, with the approach starting directly from town via Wadi Shrij.
Jebel Umm Silla

Jebel Umm Silla is renowned for its striking vertical wall, rising dramatically above Wadi Tala and Wadi Itlah. A series of cracks and features provide climbing opportunities on an otherwise sheer face. Located only a short distance from St Catherine, it can easily be visited as a day trip.
Jebel Abu Mahashur

The smooth granite dome of Jebel Abu Mahashur is one of the most distinctive landmarks in the central high mountains. Visible from many parts of the region, its sweeping rock faces create an impressive and unmistakable silhouette. The approach takes around 1.5 hours from town and is mostly uphill, so you may consider setting up camp at the base in one of the Bedouin gardens. A camel can be arranged to carry equipment, if needed.
Jebel Batta

Jebel Batta is known for its steep, clean rock faces and easy accessibility. Located between the settlements of Wadi Raha and Abu Seila, near the road, it can be reached by ordinary vehicle. This makes it one of the most convenient climbing destinations in the St Catherine region.
Jebel el Banat

Jebel el Banat is a massive granite dome characterised by broad, smooth rock slabs and a shallow basin on its summit. Located in the remote Wadi Nogra area of Wadi Freah, it is one of the more isolated climbing destinations around Saint Catherine. Reaching the mountain requires around two-three hours of walking either from Abu Seila, Abu Zeituna, or Sheikh Awad, partly over rough and demanding terrain. Because of the distance involved, camping near the base is recommended. A camel can be arranged to transport climbing gear and supplies.
